Update – Today’s Attempted Online OSSLT

Dear Parents/Guardians,

This morning, all nine AMDSB secondary schools were to participate in the Education Quality and Accountability Office’s online Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) pilot project. The pilot project involved more than 100,000 students in more than 900 secondary school across the province.

Under the pilot project, students who were successful in writing the test would have fulfilled their literacy requirement. Any students who were unsuccessful would have an opportunity to succeed in March 2017 without penalty.

Unfortunately, due to serious difficulties at the EQAO, our schools were unable to connect to the test site and our students were therefore unable to write the test.

Reports on social media indicate that most school boards across the province experienced problems as well and had to withdraw from the online trial.

We thank students, parents, guardians, teachers, administrators and staff members across the school district for their efforts and understanding during this test of the new OSSLT online network.

We support the EQAO’s efforts to modernize the writing of the OSSLT, and we hope that once the technical issues at EQAO have been rectified, our students will have another opportunity to participate in writing the OSSLT online.

Online OSSLT – Thursday, October 20

Grade 10 students have their first chance to complete the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test this Thursday, October 20. This will be an online test, so it must be completed on computers. Our students will be using desktops. Students who successfully complete this OSSLT will have that requirement for graduation all done and will not have to do it again. Students who are not successful will have another chance to write the OSSLT on March 30, 2017. While the grade 10 students are doing the online OSSLT, grade 9 students will be writing a paper version of a practice literacy test in order for them to learn more about it. Here is how Thursday will play out:

  1. Grade 10 students, as well as previously eligible students who have not yet successfully completed the OSSLT, will complete the online test during periods 1 and 2.
  2. Grade 9 students will learn writing strategies and will write one booklet of a practice OSSLT during periods 1 and 2.
  3. Senior students (grades 11 and 12) will not be required to attend morning classes and are able to stay home until afternoon classes begin.
  4. All students will attend regularly scheduled afternoon classes.
  5. Buses will run on their normal schedule.

Interim Reports and Parents’ Night – October 12

Interim reports were mailed out on October 4. All grade 9 students received one . . . some indicating concerns and some showing that all is well. Students in grades 10 – 12 only received an interim report if at least one of their teachers had a concern that might impact the student’s achievement of a credit in that course. We encourage all parents/guardians to stay in contact with teachers so that they can work together to help our students do as well as they can in all of their courses.

The semester one Parent-Teacher Interview night is Wednesday, October 12 from 6 – 8 pm in the CHSS cafeteria. You can come within those times and wait to see your child’s teachers, or you can have your child book specific times with those teachers in order to make your visit more efficient. Either way, we hope you will take this opportunity to meet our teaching staff who are looking after your child’s educational needs.
